SUSSEX FOOD AND DRINK HEROES ANNOUNCED
Meads Village butchers from Meads, Eastbourne and a member of Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce was crowned Sussex Butcher of the Year at a glamorous Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2009/10 dinner held at the East Sussex National Golf Resort & Spa near Uckfield on January 28. Over 9000 people voted for more than 300 top quality Sussex food and drink businesses and personalities in this fourth year of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards, which is run by Natural PR with A Taste of Sussex to promote and reward the best Sussex producers and the outlets which support them. Said Clive Beddall OBE, Chairman of the Judges: “Sussex food and drink producers are now leading the way in the UK’s local food revolution and the food and farming sector here is becoming the envy of its colleagues in other regions of the UK. This year our winners come from right across the county and the quality is absolutely outstanding.”
Meads Village Butchers in Meads is owned by Bob and Beth Young. They took over the shop a year ago, completely redesigning and refocusing the shop so winning the award has been quite a feat. It is a traditional butchers with traditional values, focusing on local and free range quality meat. They are passionate about quality of product and service. Says Bob Young,( far left) “We trim our meat to individual needs, stocking a full range of cuts together with duck, geese, rabbit and game in season. Alongside are fresh pies, which have become something of a legend in Eastbourne, made with our own local meat and speciality sausages made on the premises. We are working on dry curing our own bacon in house. The customer is king.”
In days when many butchers are failing under the onslaught of supermarkets Bob feels they have hit the nerve of customers who want quality, local meat with individual service at sensible prices. Butchers, like many other retail trades, have to refocus and adapt to thrive in this difficult climate. Meads Village Butchers proves it can be done. Says Bob, “Customers want local meat now which is traceable to their area and that is what we give them. Unlike many butchers we happily carry out home deliveries.”
Bob feels that many more high class caterers and prestigious restaurants will be interested in the high class product and service they offer. Parts of the catering trade are still feeling the effect of the current economic climate and using the Sussex Butcher of the Year, and advertising the fact, must give a competitive edge in this market. Bob says, “We work closely with our trade customers providing a quality product and offering excellent service at sensible prices. We believe the key to success in this market is to listen to the client and keep communicating. Call Bob on 01323 732591 for more information.
